We were delighted last week to announce our new team of Head Students for the next academic year, who were chosen following a rigorous voting process across staff, Year 12 students and Senior leadership Team members. A huge congratulations to our new Head Students Bibibella M and Jake B, and Deputy Head Students, Neveah R and Lucy P on this tremendous achievement. We had ten great candidates and the six not appointed are being offered the chance to apply for one of the remaining four Student Executive positions, which will be decided through an interview process. All the successful students will then participate in a Danes Educational Trust senior student leadership day that we are hosting later in May.
Exams have been well underway this month with our Year 10 and 12 students navigating their mock exams. For Year 10 this was their first experience of formal examinations in preparation for their GCSEs, which can be a daunting time, but I am informed that the vast majority adhered to the strict regulations very well.
Our inaugural Year 13s enjoyed a celebratory last day last Friday involving speeches, a farewell pizza picnic lunch and an afternoon outing of paintballing. Our Year 11s have enjoyed their last day today with ice creams and shirt signing in the sunshine and a farewell leavers assembly. Both year groups have now begun their study leave and I’d like to wish them every success in their upcoming exams.
As you will read in the articles that follow, students have been busy this month campaigning in global matters ranging from worldwide education, the use of plastics and the issues of surveillance advertising targeted at young people. It’s fantastic to see students take an interest and passion in such matters, driving change in the world around them.

As part of an ongoing project since 2022, a number of Year 10 and 11 students, along with Mrs Haacke from the Humanities faculty, have been involved in a project delivered by environmental charity Global Action Plan.
With the worrying statistic that the average 14 year old is estimated to be shown up to 1,260 adverts every day on social media alone, students were inspired to build a youth-led campaign which tackles the ‘buy now get next day’ culture, that puts young people under increasing pressure by advertisers and online platforms to over consume, whilst also having their privacy invaded through surveillance advertising.
Last month at Croxley Danes we celebrated Earth Day, a day where people worldwide pay special attention to our natural environment and how human behaviours are negatively impacting environmental health. Below is an article written by students from our People and Planet group about what they did to mark the occasion.
On Earth Day, Monday 22nd of April, some students from the People and Planet group attended the Eco Youth Forum which took place at Harvey Road School. We discussed and raised the issues of the people vs plastic theme of this year’s Earth Day. Together, we and the four other schools came up with ideas on how to use less plastic in our day to day lives. We also raised a plastic art competition for schools around Croxley and the best pieces of Art will be displayed. As well as this, together we and the four schools started to put forward a project to create a piece of art based on plastic and how it is affecting our planet.
Before the Easter holidays, Year 12 student Robbie spent the day with Special Envoy Helen Grant MP at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office as part of the Youth Education Council to represent the Send My Friend campaign and discuss challenges and solutions around global education. Here Robbie gives his perspective and insights on the day.
On Wednesday 20th March, I attended the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office as part of the Youth Education Council, representing the Send My Friend To School campaign.
We were delighted with the success of our first ever Croxley Danes School iftar last month, held on the last day of term to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. An iftar is the most important meal of the day during Ramadan as it’s the meal that follows a whole day of fasting and is often seen as an opportunity to create an interfaith gathering with delicious food, friends, and conversation.
Congratulations to Erin H in Year 7 and Enya C in Year 9, who were shortlisted as finalists in their category in Hertfordshire County Council’s recent Just Talk poetry competition. Their poems stood out among a pool of exceptional entries for their creativity, depth, and interpretation of the theme "The Power of Small."
The judges were truly impressed by the talent and imagination displayed in their writing. Their work will be featured in a commemorative booklet celebrating the finalists of the competition which will serve as a testament to the remarkable achievements of young poets in Hertfordshire and will be available at www.justtalkherts.org once finalised.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the quiz night. It was a phenomenal success. We hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!
We are currently working hard with multiple suppliers to secure the best prices we can to produce stationery packs for the Year 9s going into Year 10 in preparation for GSCEs. We will be communicating prices and details on how to order these shortly.
We have our next meeting this evening, Tuesday 7th May, 6.30pm (a change from the previously advertised date of 8th May). Please do come along and join us.
